Mother’s Day, the day to celebrate and cherish the mothers, grandmothers, and aunts who have impacted our lives, and honor those maternal figures who model fortitude, caring, generosity, and strength. It is a day to appreciate the sacrifices and hard work that often goes unnoticed; from the patience and dedication required to accomplish the daily tasks of a family, to the invisible navigation of personalities and the needs of others. Mother’s Day asks us to demonstrate appreciation for the skill and effort involved in the art of motherhood, but how did a day dedicated to honoring the maternal figures in our lives become a holiday?
The official Mother’s Day in the US began with the surprisingly unmarried and child free Anna Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who had the desire to honor her mother’s remarkable life after her death in 1905.
Anna’s mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, had been an influential figure in the region after organizing events titled “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs.” These events were intended to help mothers learn important skills in parenting, and a fortunate consequence of these club meetings was the unintended unity throughout the community. In response, Ann helped organize “Mothers’ Friendship Day” to promote mutual amity between Union and Confederate soldiers.
After Ann’s passing, Anne Jarvis went on to organize “Mother’s Day” events dedicated to showing gratitude for the hard work of motherhood. These events were sponsored by a Philadelphia retail store owner, and were attended by thousands of people. This implanted the ambition in Anne to begin a new “Mother’s Day” holiday, and after years of effort, Anne was finally successful in 1913 when the holiday was officially added to the national calendar by President Woodrow Wilson.
This holiday offers a chance to demonstrate our thanks for those women in our lives who have offered a beacon of guidance, a presence of warmth and nurturing, and a source protection and unconditional love. So get out and buy those flowers, write a card, and if you can’t visit your loved one, make a phone call.
