One of the most popular types of collectibles is trading cards, an empire of an avocation that began simply as a clever and creative strategy for packaging. In the 1880s, tobacco companies began producing colorful cards that depicted well-known events, deadly animals, and famous sports figures to create a memorable impression on their customers. On the practical side, the cards provided a solid brace for wrapped merchandise. This sparked an interest from consumers in the cards themselves. Candy companies eventually caught on to this strategy and began making their own cards depicting innocent, playful designs to appeal to children.

It was not until well into the twentieth century that trading cards were more extensively produced for the purpose of appealing to collectors. For many decades, the most popular cards centered around sports, but popular cards also depicted movie and pop stars, popular news and radio broadcasts, film franchises, athletes, and more. Trading cards grow in value over time depending on their condition, or grade, and the number of cards that were originally produced. Rare cards in mint condition are sought after. Today, collecting trading cards is not only a financial investment, but remains a personal hobby and a way to bring communities of likeminded people together.

They are also fans of Magic: the Gathering, Yugioh, and more, and host weekly tournaments that invite a large crowd, so come by for some good company, friendly competition, and fun!

GI Card Shop takes a hand in supporting the surrounding community as well. One of the events they’ve hosted includes Paint and Take, an event sponsored by Nebraska Veterans Helping Fellow Veterans, and meant to connect veterans and their families with the community through a fun crafting activity.
